As a young girl, Nicole Rose always wanted to work in the beauty and hair industry but had no interest in being a beautician. She wanted to develop a haircare brand but did not know where to begin. During the quarantine, she finally decided to create Ella Dean, a natural haircare brand for men and women with textured hair. Although, the pandemic has caused a lot of trauma for everyone, Nicole says...
“It was a blessing in disguise. It gave me a chance to show off my creativity and bring my brand to life.”
Men and women with textured hair are always asking her what type of products to use. She figured it was finally time to educate others and express how passionate she is about natural haircare.
While creating the new brand, she had a hard time looking for the right hair oils to seal in the moisture. Almost every oil she came across would dry out her curls. Her hair would become dull and lifeless. She described it as completely “unattractive.” She studied hair products and ingredients for several years and concluded that many of these natural hair brands are not listening to their consumers regarding their hair struggles. Instead, they are misrepresenting the benefits and features of their products. That is when she realized it was time for something new for herself and naturalistas of the world.

Ella Dean products are made with organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs that aid in hair growth and prevent scalp inflammation and hair loss. The Black haircare market is oversaturated with the same or similar ingredients. Nicole Rose wanted to switch it up and introduce her audience to new ingredients we usually don't see on the market.
“Ella Dean will represent a unique and fresh perspective in the hair and beauty industry. Our incorporation of fruits, vegetables, and herbs will set our products apart from the rest.”
Fruits and vegetables carrier oils that have many essential vitamins, which increase your hair’s overall health. Compared to other carrier oils such as Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Shea Butter. Herbs are plants with aromatic properties and are used for medicinal purposes.
Nicole gets most of her inspiration from her grandmother and parents.

“My grandmother Gloria was a full-time single mother raising three kids and a full-time beautician. When it came to business, she was constantly in local newspapers, magazines, taught at cosmetology schools, and was featured in The Oregon Historical Society Museum for Black History Month.”
Her grandmother inspires her to be a successful Black businesswoman and to never to give up. Nicole watched her grandmother work every Tuesday-Saturday for years. Her grandmother never complained or fussed.
“Her working for many years has benefited the family tremendously because of her, our family's salon and legacy will forever be a part of Portland's history.”
Nicole’s parents inspire her, as well. Her mother is a children's book author, and for many years, she consistently sent letters to publishing companies until one day, a publishing company in New York reached out to her. Nicole describes her mother as a determined woman who never gives up or backs down. Her mother never let rejection letters discourage her. Instead, it encouraged her to keep working harder to achieve her dreams.
Nicole describes her father as a genius. He would always teach her about business and how to handle finances properly, and so much more. “Without him, she wouldn't know how to run Ella Dean. He always checks in with her business to make sure she is not making any mistakes.”
Just like Nicole’s parents have inspired her, She hopes young Black women get inspired and motivated by her new business and future achievements to come.

“I want Black women to feel like they can be successful in whatever career or industry they are in. I want them to feel empowered and to never to let anyone stand in between their success.”
